- A3 RISO PRINT 01 - The Cledford Projectby The Cledford
The Cledford is an experimental project. The process involves a collaging of a variety of found imagery, geometric and organic shapes through a Riso copier/printer. The Riso is designed to reproduce mass quantities of printed material. The Cledford experiment took the Riso and used it in another way, to create numerous individual Graphic Collages. The variety of images, colourways and the general (but loved) inconsistencies of the Riso were harnessed to create a series of individual works, each unique and not replicated.
Some elements are shared across the designs but no two finished prints are the same, composition and colour vary, the accidental scuffs and literal fingerprints of the Artist evident in the work. The collages were printed onto a variety of paper stocks, wet ink blending with overprinted and over-layed images. With Geometric shapes and Organic marks clashing with images of feminine beauty, Pop Culture, Americana and Historical objects to create juxtapositions that only occur in that one instance of when they were printed.
The prints were never made to be perfect, or clean, or replicable they were created with an element of not knowing, of waiting to see what dropped out of the tray. Accepting of the quirks of the process, reveling in the varied outputs. Each print becomes a statement in itself, a new design, a one off.
Through using the Riso as a design tool, part of a creative process each experimental composition yielded a new result, a kind of human, screenprinty, photocopy algorithmic loveliness. The end of the process for each print came with a nod from the designer, if the print needed more it went back through the system, another image overlayed more depth added if not it was left, complete.5
