Eye Before You Buy 94
The latest edition of Eye is a type special, which includes features about Nadine Chahine, MuirMcNeil, NovoTypo, House Industries and Neue Kabe, among many other subjects like publishing, design software, education and photography – as well as a packed reviews section covering design and visual culture from around the world. Eye Magazine, which is very famous for its striking covers, innovated in its latest issue (Eye 94) bringing in more than 8000 different digitally printed unique covers designed by Paul McNeil and Hamish Muir (based on their typefaces TwoPoint and TwoPlus).
Eye is printed by Pureprint Group in Uckfield, East Sussex. For this latest issue, ‘Eye Before You Buy’, covers were printed on the HP Indigo 10000 digital press, using a variable data program called Mosaic. The rest of the magazine was printed offset litho. The Mosaic program supplies a distinctive image file for each pass of the press, each derived in this case from a number of ‘seed’ files supplied by MuirMcNeil that repeat the letters of the word ‘eye’. Mosaic makes it feasible to resize, rotate and change the colour of the artwork, cropping it in order to make each cover exclusive.
